Program Description

Audiology is a health profession specializing in the comprehensive assessment of the auditory and vestibular systems and their functions. Audiologists are involved in the selection, fitting, and follow-up of hearing aids, as well as in the implementation of auditory and vestibular rehabilitation approaches. They work with individuals of all ages to support the development, maintenance, and optimization of communication abilities and quality of life in the presence of hearing or balance disorders. Audiologists also play a key role in public health and prevention, particularly in school, industrial, and community settings.

The practice of audiology is grounded in advanced knowledge of biomedical sciences, neuroscience, acoustics, and psychology. The Master of Health Sciences in Audiology program provides students with this essential knowledge, along with the skills required to intervene ethically and with interdisciplinarity and a person-centered approach in various care settings.

The program promotes a person-centered and evidence-based education, drawing from research and clinical expertise to deliver effective, personalized care based on the best available knowledge.

The mission of the Master of Health Sciences Audiology program is to train professionals capable of optimizing the auditory and vestibular health of Francophone communities within Canada's bilingual and multicultural context. All courses are offered in French. However, written assignments and exams may be completed in either French or English. Furthermore, mandatory clinical placements take place in English-speaking, French-speaking, or bilingual environments. Students must have a functional knowledge of both official languages.

The Master of Health Sciences in Audiology program spans six consecutive terms, or two years of full-time study. It includes both coursework and mandatory clinical placements. These placements primarily occur in specialized hearing and vestibular health clinics, hospitals, or rehabilitation centers in the National Capital Region, although some may take place outside this area. Supervised by clinical audiologists, these placements allow students to apply their knowledge in real-world settings, develop clinical skills, and prepare for ethical, evidence-based professional practice.

The curriculum follows the standards established by the Council for Accreditation of Canadian University Programs in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CACUP-ASLP.) Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible to take the Canadian Entry-to-Practice Exam in Audiology, administered by Speech-Language & Audiology Canada (SAC). Graduates also meet the general requirements for licensure across Canadian provinces.

A statement of interest in pursuing studies in the Microprogram Health Management and Entrepreneurship will be possible on the admission application. As a complement following graduation from the Master's in Audiology, the microprogram prepares students to excel clinically and to meet the challenges of management and leadership by providing key skills to work in private practice, launch their own clinic, or join a small business. The statement of interest will allow access to the microprogram without submitting a separate admission application. Consortium National de Formation en Santé (CNFS)

The CNFS is a pan-Canadian organization funded by Health Canada. It brings together sixteen postsecondary institutions that offer French-language programs in various health professions. The CNFS aims to improve access to French-language health services for minority communities by training Francophone health professionals.

The University of Ottawa is one of the 16 member institutions of the CNFS. Its role is to support students, professors, researchers, health professionals, and supervisors involved in its 12 targeted programs across three faculties: the Faculty of Health Sciences, the Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Social Sciences. These programs help increase the presence and contributions of Francophone health professionals, enabling them to fully meet the health needs of communities in French and to contribute meaningfully to their well-being and full development.

To be eligible, candidates must:

• Hold:
  • An honours bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) with a minimum average of B (70%).  OR
  • Be in the process of successfully completing, in a recognized Canadian university, three years at the equivalent of 15 units per term¹ in an honours 4-year bachelor's degree program², with a minimum cumulative grade point average of A (85%) after the winter term of the third year.
• Have obtained 3 university units in each of the following subjects:
  • intermediate level quantitative statistics or research methods
  • human physiology or anatomy
  • acoustics or analysis of sound or of speech sounds
  • linguistics³, on a relevant topic, preferably in general phonetics or phonetics-phonology
  • psychology, on a relevant topic (eg: child development, aging, perception)
• Have completed a Computer-Based Assessment for Sampling Personal Characteristics (CASPer).⁴

Language Requirements

Be proficient in written and spoken French and have a working knowledge of written and spoken English. In order to evaluate these language skills, tests in French or English are required in the official language other than that of the undergraduate degree. • If the language of instruction during the undergraduate degree was neither French nor English, the candidate must take both the French and English proficiency tests.
• If you have completed multiple university degrees, including at least one in French and one in English, you can request an exemption from the language test by emailing healthsc@uottawa.ca. Please note that the language test requirement will remain in place unless you receive confirmation of this exemption.
• Candidates are responsible for any fees associated with the language tests.
• In preparation for bilingual clinical placements, the School of Rehabilitation Sciences offers an English conversation course (REA 5940). This course may be recommended or required according to the applicants’ language competencies.
• If deemed necessary, an English or French course could be added to the program of study at the time of admission and would be considered a program requirement.

The clinical placements AUD 5529, AUD 5579, AUD 6529, AUD 6539, AUD 6579, and AUD 6649 are compulsory and represent a progression towards the clinical skills required for entry into practice of the profession. Depending on the specific characteristics of the placement settings, it is possible that the minimum required number of hours in one of the professional domains may not be met. If this occurs, a complementary placement in the relevant area of practice may be required. This complementary placement then becomes a program requirement and must be successfully completed.

Minimum Requirements

The passing grade in all courses is C+. A grade of C+ in three or more courses in the same term results in withdrawal from the program. S (Satisfactory) is required for each clinical placement.

Two failures (course or clinical placement) result in withdrawal from the program. In the case of a single failure, the failed course or clinical placement can be repeated the next time the course is offered, but enrollment for courses or clinical placements for which the failed course or clinical placement is a prerequisite will not be possible. In this case, it will not be possible to complete the program within the prescribed time. Failing the repeated course or clinical placement is considered a second failure.

Duration of the Program

The program is spread over 6 consecutive full-time terms.

Expected Professional Behaviour

Students enroled in the Master of Health Sciences in Audiology program are required to uphold and adhere to standards of integrity and professional ethics in all aspects of the program (including coursework, clinical placements, and group work) as well as during interactions with colleagues and with all individuals who contribute to course instruction, clinical supervision and placements, research, and more broadly to your academic training. Requirements for Clinical Placements

Students enroled in the Master of Health Sciences in Audiology program are required to comply with the Faculty of Health Sciences' Requirements for practical learning activities (courses, labs, internships, and clinical placements) regarding immunizations, police record checks, and any other training or information necessary to ensure health and safety in clinical settings. It is the responsibility of each student to be aware of these requirements and to take the necessary steps to meet them.

Non-compliance with clinical placement requirements may lead to serious consequence, including the inability to complete clinical placements and even removal from the placement.

Attendance at clinical placements is mandatory, the abandonment of a clinical placement already started without good reason is a failure. In accordance with the affiliation agreement between the University of Ottawa and the clinical institution: "The organization may terminate an internship in a clinical setting and prohibit a student from continuing it if, in its opinion, the student’s behavior represents a potential danger to its customers or patients or has a negative impact on their well-being or on the personnel of the organization ". In the event that a student is excluded from the placement setting, a failing grade will be assigned for that clinical placement.

The clinical placements mainly take place in the Ottawa region, but they may also occur in other parts of Ontario and Canada. In some cases, the Consortium National de Formation en Santé (CNFS) may covert part of the travel costs for out-of-area clinical placements.
