The School of Psychology offers graduate programs leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and an M.A. in Psychology. In the PhD, the following programs are offered; Clinical Psychology and Psychology with the following fields approved by the Ontario Council on Graduate Studies:

For the MA-PhD program, only students who intend to complete a doctorate are admitted. In special circumstances, students may be requested to complete the MA program after their first year of enrollment. The School participates in a collaborative program in Canadian Studies at the PhD level.
The program is governed by the academic regulations in effect for graduate studies.

MA with Major Research Paper
This is a research-intensive program whose objective is to provide students with advanced research training in Psychology to prepare them for further studies at the PhD level or research careers in various settings (e.g., government, industry, community organizations).
MA - Course based with Co-op
The objective of this program is to equip students with broad-based research skills in Psychology and Co-op work experience in their field to prepare them for careers in various settings (e.g., government, industry, community organizations).

MA with Research Paper
The normal minimum requirement for admission is the Honours Bachelor in Psychology, or its equivalent, including an Honour's thesis or an equivalent individual research project. In addition, course requirements include a course in History and Systems of Psychology (or its equivalent), and two courses in statistical analysis (or their equivalents). If these course requirements are not met at the time of admission, the candidates will be required to complete them within the first year of graduate studies.
Exceptionally, admission to the MA with MRP is possible on the basis of a four-year Honour's degree in another discipline relevant to Psychology, with a letter of support from the prospective supervisor. The degree must include a thesis or an equivalent individual research project and the equivalent of at least 36 units (12 one-term courses) in Psychology, including statistics and some research experience.
Note: Students with a strong background in mathematics, physical sciences, biological science or computer science are especially encouraged to apply.
MA Coursework with Co-op

Mandatory Co-op
The mandatory Co-op in the MA Course-based is offered in collaboration with the University of Ottawa’s Co-op office. The Co-op gives students
the opportunity to acquire practical work experience by completing a one-term (four months) work placement in government, industry, community organizations, university settings, and research centres.
Students obtain six units for their work experience and Co-op report. The Co-op term is graded P/F (Pass or Fail), based on the employer’s report and on a written report will be evaluated by a professor in the program (who also serves as the program’s representative on the University’s Co-op Committee).
The units awarded for the Co-op work term may not be used to obtain equivalences for other courses. In other words, the Co-op units are additional to the minimum requirements of the MA degree.
To remain enrolled in the Co-op option, students must maintain full-time status and a 8.0 grade point average.
Fast-track from Master’s in Psychology to Doctoral Program in Psychology
Students enrolled in the MA may be allowed to fast-track to the PhD program without being required to complete the Master's program. For additional information, please consult the “Admission Requirements” section of the PhD program.

PSY 6002 Practicum en recherche appliquée / Practicum in Applied Research (3 crédits / 3 units)
Ce practicum de recherche doit se dérouler dans un milieu de recherche appliquée (ex. industrie pharmaceutique ou de haute technologie, service de gestion des ressources humaines, milieu hospitalier ou scolaire). On reconnaît aux étudiants un total de 90 heures de travail dans un ou plusieurs projets de recherche liés à leur domaine de spécialisation. Ce practicum constitue une approximation d'un système co-op et fournit aux étudiants l'occasion de profiter d'une expérience dans le marché du travail et de mettre à l'épreuve la pertinence de leurs connaissances et de leurs habiletés. / This research practicum is to take place in an applied research setting off campus (e.g. pharmaceutical or high-technology industry, human resources management service, hospitals or school setting). Students are credited for a total of 90 hours of work on one or several research projects related to their area of expertise. This practicum is intended as an approximation of a co-op system whereby students have the opportunity to gain some experience in the work force and test the relevance of their knowledge base and skills.

Ce practicum constitue une approximation d'un système co-op et fournit aux étudiants l'occasion de profiter d'une expérience dans le marché du travail et de mettre à l'épreuve la pertinence de leurs connaissances et de leurs habiletés. / Practica are in-person opportunities for students to work with people receiving psychedelics or conduct cutting-edge psychedelic research. Students are credited for a total of 100 hours of work on one or several research projects related to their area of expertise. This practicum is intended as an approximation of a co-op system whereby students have the opportunity to gain experience in the work force and test the relevance of their knowledge base and skills.

This course covers the theoretical and practical aspects of neuropsychological assessment. Topics include an introduction to neuropsychological assessment and a review of major cognitive domains (e.g., attention, memory, language), with an emphasis on assessment of these domains as well as interpretation and recommendations. Students will be introduced to neuropsychological assessment tests, will consider interpretation including differential diagnosis and ecological validity, and will review how assessment results can be incorporated in a neuropsychological report. Psychedelic drugs are quickly gaining attention as catalysts for transformation and growth, particularly among those with mental health conditions that have generally been considered difficult to treat. This course will survey a range of topics related to the neuroscience of psychedelics including how psychedelics exert their mechanisms of action in the nervous system, the role of various transmitters in maintaining mental health symptoms and the potential role of psychedelics in reversing these symptoms, the various neurological effects of psychedelic drugs, contraindicated use of psychedelics with other psychiatric medications, and more.

The curriculum covers the foundational principles of research ethics, including historical frameworks like the Belmont Report, while delving into the darker history of abuses in early research with psychoactive substances. PSY 6148 Fieldwork in Indigenous and Cultural Healing Practices (3 units)
This course advances Indigenous and other cultural ways of knowing by introducing students to traditional holistic systems of healing that include sacred plant medicines. This includes short term fieldwork opportunities (typically 8-10 days) among traditional healers and/ or entheogenic religious communities where the spiritual and communal dimensions of healing are centre stage. Students will have the opportunity to learn from traditional healers (shamans, curanderos, madrihnas, etc.), observe the ritual and ceremonial bases of healing, and examine the uses of non-ordinary states of consciousness (NOSC) for addressing mental health concerns, personal growth, and improved wellbeing. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the cultural context of the healing practice, neuropharmacology of serotonergic plant medicines, psychological mechanisms of change, and cultural approaches for self-care.

Il s'agit d'un travail de terrain de courte durée (généralement de 8 à 10 jours) auprès de guérisseurs traditionnels et/ou de communautés religieuses enthéogéniques où les dimensions spirituelles et communautaires de la guérison occupent une place centrale. Focus on the conceptual framework and analytic procedures associated with causal modeling, as it relates to psychological research.
